Fish Head Fever
Fish Head Fever: A Story of Zombies, Mermaids and One Immortal Chihuahua

World: Urban fantasy. Modern-day California with fantasy elements.

Races: Humans, Merm (Mermaids and Mermen), Zombies, Aztec Deities, and Animal Spirits.

Magic System: Characters from the spirit realm have various powers.

Premise: Detective. Main Character, Joe, solves case for missing family and zombie virus.

Appraisal: This story brought me back to my Dresden Files days, when I inhaled the whole series like a chain smoker. The book begins with a very fast-paced, almost dizzying, introduction to the exotic world of the mermaids. (Joe is a merman, dad, mer-MAN!)

Joe is not a private eye, but rather an empowered victim who grows into the role of an amateur detective. He discovers clues and stumbles upon revelations that lead up to solving the mystery of the zombie virus and his missing family. The plot, however, does not follow classic whodunnit rules where the reader is given a chance to piece together the clues before the main character reveals the solution. Instead, oddly impossible incongruities start making sense as each reveal hits the narrative.

The primary thrill along the way is the writing style. The wordsmithing is vibrant and relentless, teasing your mind with vivid images and fresh memories. The thoughts jump around like a bucking horse in a bronco, compelling the reader to grip the sentences tighter as they leap about.

Overall, if you like urban fantasy and paranormal detective books, you'll love this one! Highly recommended.
